A nursing home (also known as a skilled nursing facility or a long-term care facility) provides extensive health care services for elderly people who may have ongoing physical or mental conditions. Registered nurses will regularly monitor the residents of the nursing homes, they will also have licensed medical professionals available 24 hours a day. Most large nursing homes also have full-time physical therapists for their residents. Ontario has more than 600 long-term care facilities, some of them are publicly owned and the majority of them are privately owned. Assisted living facilities cater to seniors, as well as younger individuals, who have certain limitations in terms of physical or cognitive health.

There are several different types of independent living homes, the common ones include condos, suites, and apartments in towers. Other independent living residences are in the form of subdivision complexes, senior apartments in a single building, townhouses, bungalow-style single residences, and cluster housing. As the population continues to age and the needs of Toronto’s growing elderly population continue to increase, senior housing options available to retired citizens become more available. City planners spearheaded the effort in 2012 by creating the Toronto Senior Care Strategy, aimed at providing senior citizens with the health care and services they need, whether they choose to live at home or receive long-term care within a senior housing facility. Nursing homes provide valuable personal and medical care services to elderly citizens. Licensed medical professionals and qualified nurses are always present to supervise the residents at the nursing homes.
According to Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph public health, a number of long term care homes have recently seen outbreaks of RSV. Advocates say respiratory illnesses are taking a toll on long-term care facilities, prompting calls for Canadians to exercise caution this holiday season while attending gatherings with senior citizens. "We are seeing RSV get into long-term care homes and some real concerns about it taking over the home," said Laura Tamblyn Watts, the CEO of CanAge, Canada's national seniors' advocacy organization. Toronto offers more than 500 retirement home options in the downtown area, as well as senior housing options in the surrounding areas.

A Note on Family
Elderly Community Health Services at St. Joseph’s Health Center as well as the Seniors’ Health Center at North York Hospital are two of Toronto’s premier medical centers, both of which provide a variety of geriatric services. These services are located outside of Etobicoke, but provide service to Etobicoke. Researching different long-term care homes will help you decide where to apply. You can learn about homes on your own, and you can also work with the Home and Community Care Support Services placement coordinator. Placement coordinators will know about all the homes in your area, and you can talk to them about your needs and what you’re looking for.

Long-term care homes are also known as Homes for the Aged or Nursing Homes. In November 2015, Toronto City Council approved the Long-Term Care Homes & Services Capital Renewal Plan. At the same time, there is an increase in the complexity of residents’ and clients’ physical and mental health conditions and behaviours, requiring an investment in increased training, specialized services, and new approaches to care. Further, with the growing movement to support Torontonians to age at home for as long as possible and large wait-lists for long-term care homes, many individuals entering the City’s long-term care homes are older, frailer and have more complex needs than in the past.
